Test and Balance Technicians use specialized tools and test equipment to inspect, test, adjust, and balance heating, cooling, and ventilating systems in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings to achieve performance standards specified in the design of the system.
Test and Balance Technicians will study system blueprints, specifications, and performance data to determine the proper configuration and purpose of the system’s components, such as motors, pumps, fans, switches, ducts, or pipes. They adjust the system’s controls to settings recommended by the vendor, conduct measurement tests, and discuss system malfunctions with system users to isolate problems. Test and Balance Technicians conduct HVAC test and balance procedures in either new construction and/or remodel-type projects. They collect and tabulate system test data, make field observations and coordinate closely with other construction trades such as electrical, mechanical, temperature control, and design teams.
